Senior DEHS music student, Malaika Paralkar was selected as the winner of the High School Composition Contest hosted by Susquehanna University. Submissions were open to all 9-12 grade Pennsylvania students and pieces were evaluated based on musical quality, originality and appropriateness for performance by music major undergraduates . She will receive a $1,000 prize, plus a travel allowance to attend a live performance of her brass quintet piece entitled Triumph on March 26, 2019 at Susquehanna University. Malaika is a current member of the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Marching Band and Instrumental Ensemble at DEHS and is a former AP Music Theory student. Malaika, who wants to major in music composition, hopes to get feedback on her work from Susquehanna University’s musicians and theory professors so that she can use it as part of her college application portfolio.
